Appraisal Techniques for Jade

The identification techniques for jade mainly include observing texture, transparency, hardness, weight, sound, thermal conductivity, and other aspects.
Observation of texture: The texture of real jade is natural and delicate, while the texture of fake jade is often rough and unclear. Under different lighting conditions, the texture of real jade will change, while the texture of fake jade is relatively stable.
Observing transparency: True jade has a higher transparency and often presents a semi transparent to opaque state, while fake jade often has lower transparency and may appear more cloudy.
Observation of hardness: True jade has a higher hardness and can be scratched with a knife, but the scratches are often shallow, while fake jade has a lower hardness and may have deeper scratches with a knife. In addition, real jade may produce a crisp sound during collisions, while fake jade may produce a dull sound.
Observing weight: Due to the high density of real jade, its weight is often heavier, while the density of fake jade is smaller, so its weight may be lighter. In terms of texture, real jade gives a more solid feeling, while fake jade may feel lighter.
Observing sound: Gently tapping on the jade, real jade will make a clear and pleasant sound, while fake jade may make a dull sound. This is because the internal structure of real jade is tight, while the internal structure of fake jade may be relatively loose.
Observing thermal conductivity: True jade has a higher thermal conductivity, so when measured with hot water, its temperature may change faster, while false jade has a lower thermal conductivity, so its temperature change may be slower. But this method requires more professional equipment and operation, and is generally not suitable for ordinary consumers.
In addition, for specific types of jade such as jadeite, identification can also be carried out by observing their surface flash characteristics, color distribution, and luster. For example, the surface of jadeite often presents star shaped, linear, and sheet-like shining characteristics, with rich and uneven colors, and its luster is glassy and relatively bright.
